920 Terry Lane - Old Town - Key West

920 Terry Lane - Old Town - Key West

Just listed by Preferred Properties (that's where I work, but this is not my listing) 920 Terry Lane in Old Town Key West. This house sits opposite the foot of the Historic Key West Lighthouse. I doubt that the view from 920 Terry Lane will change within the lifetime of anyone reading this blog. And that ought to mean long term neighborhood stability for any buyer of this property.

I found a photo of the property taken in 1965, above. Compare the facade in 1965 to the way the house looks today.

The listing Realtor describes 920 Terry Lane this way:
"A Million Dollar House with a Million Dollar view in one of the best locations of Old Town Key West. Just 1 block from the Hemingway House and 2 blocks from Duval,is this Historic three bedroom 3 bath home with a cocktail pool and off street parking. No expense was spared in this renovation. On the first level there are 2 bedrooms, one of which can be used as a master, vaulted ceilings, Brazilian Hardwood flooring, and a great open living/dining area. The kitchen has glazed maple cabinetry with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, large pantry with washer and dryer. Down a few steps is a great family room which opens to the pool. The master suite on the second level is the entire second floor with fabulous lighthouse views."
There 'stays' the neighborhood! This historic landmark isn't going away.

Great room

Large open kitchen towards the rear

The old house with an incredible location has been updated and expanded to meet the needs of modern day living. Gone are the small one-purpose rooms. Instead, the first floor has an open great room with soaring ceiling. The kitchen is a big open area with rich custom wood cabinets and large windows that let sun shine in to brighten the space. Off to the rear and down a step is the family room with a set of French doors that open out to the small garden and pool. Two large bedrooms complete the main floor. As the listing Realtor points out, one could use the down stairs bedroom as the master suite. Potential older buyers need to consider options like that. As we get older, stairs can become more challenging.

Great room

920 Terry Lane has 1807 sq ft of living space and sits on a 41'x79' (3212) sq ft lot. The living space is nicely divided by room function. The main living area provides access to the bedrooms on the main level. The kitchen area double functions as a core living area and as access to the stairway to the second floor and lower level family room or access to the pool. I can't believe they are still asking a million bucks for this house. They didn't get a million four when I looked at in 2006, either. It's a nice house but has been overpriced for years, imho.

Agree with the previous comment. I was stunned to see the price go up rather than down. It is a very nice house and the views of the lighthouse are nice. But the location is not ideal. The seller must not have any motivation to sell.

When I looked at it it was $800K something.

It was a nice place but more along the lines of a $550-$600K nice, not $800K-$1M nice.

Pick it up and move it eastward and then maybe it would be worth it.

I did not offer a comment on the price and I guess I won't. I did not write, as I often do, that the property is a bargain. I save comments like that for properties I really consider to be a bargain.

I did write about this property in 2011 when it was listed at a lower price and I mentioned then that I had passed up showing the house. I was surprised at how really nice this house is. The last person who commented about picking the house up and moving it east makes a point that I often make myself when I write about houses in Bahama Village. There is some real snobbery in this town about Bahama Village. This house may not be a bargain or a value in readers' minds, but it has an incredible view and charm that is without equal in our town. If this house were moved to William Street, for example, it would be priced around $1.5 million. Except it would not have that incredible location.

Gary - Unless you want to turn the comments feature off on your blog, you will always find those who will make comments on the price of a property. Many of your readers are quite savy to the Key West housing market and their input could be valuable to you and your fellow agents. Never bite the hand that feeds you in this market - you might be surprised.

Hey, I did not set the price here and I have no intention of turning off comments. I am actually surprised at how tame the comments have been.

I made the comment about the location.

I don't have a problem with Bahama Village location wise. It is (and has been for year) up and coming, but unfortunately for this seller, it's not up and come'd (yes, I'm making that word up!) enough to justify a million dollar price tag.

The house is nice, the view is nice, the location is even okay, but just not for a million dollars.

It'll continue sitting for a long time.
