1428 White Street, Key West - Just Listed

Just listed (but not by me) 1428 White Street in the Casa Marina Area of Key West, Florida.  This home was built in 2000 by David Wolkowsky, the man who built the world famous Pier House at the foot of Duval Street and who built many homes in Key West over the years. His properties are legendary.  This is one of those legendary homes.
Wolkowsky's homes are not reinterpretations of old Conch houses with white picket fences you would expect to see in Old Town. Instead, his homes evoke a sense of mystique, grandeur, and prominence. A story high privacy wall set off by two giant Balinese doors let visitors know that this must be someplace important.
The Balinese doors open to the a covered portico along the south side of the home which leads to the rear courtyard with its serene 34' X 10' pool with fountains at either end. The entire main floor of the home has travertine marble floors. The travertine extends out to the covered lanai. French doors in the living area are open to the lanai the garden and pool creating one magical living space.
The home has 1680 sq ft of refined living space divided between two floors. There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The first floor bedroom can alternatively be used as a den. The current owners use this space as a dining room. Two sets of double doors provide either privacy if the space is used as a bedroom or they can be left open and incorporate the area into the living room. The adjacent bath serves both the den/bedroom and the kitchen on the opposite wall.  Having the potential to use this space as a bedroom in later years is an option worth considering.  You never know when climbing stairs might become an issue. The kitchen has rich wood cabinets that reach to the ceiling. The kitchen door opens out to a secondary back entry off the parking area which makes bringing the groceries less of a chore.
The master suite is located at the rear. There is a dressing area just off the bedroom that leads to the bath. The en-suite bath features slate tiles on the floors and walls. The space is unexpectedly exotic. French doors open out from the master bedroom to the rear second floor balcony. The pool and garden are below.  The second floor guest suite is located on the front side of the house. The guest bedroom, bath, and dressing area run the front length of the house. Guests may feel so comfortable they may never want to leave.

The dog park, Doggie Beach, Higg's Beach, Salute on the Beach, the White Street Pier, the Queer Pier, and Louie's Backyard are all withing easy walking distance. Your dog will love you even more if you buy this house.

811 Washington St #102, Key West - Casa Marina Beauty!

I wrote about 811 Washington Street #102, Key West, Florida soon after it was listed a few months ago. It has not sold yet and I think it is time for a second look at the beautiful Casa Marina Area home.  The listing agent, not me, describes this home this way:
"Luxurious Casa Marina Estates townhouse with cathedral ceilings, high end tiles and hardwood floors throughout. Beautiful open living room with French doors opening to the pool and tranquil outdoor space. The gourmet kitchen features stainless steel Viking appliances and granite counter tops. Each bedroom is spacious and bright with en-suite bathrooms. French doors in the Master bedroom open up to a private balcony overlooking the pool and mature landscaping. X-500 flood zone means no flood insurance required. Perfectly located within walking distance of the world renowned Casa Marina Resort and close to beaches, shops, restaurants, and Duval Street."
As soon as you open the front door of this home your eyes are drawn through the interior toward the pool at the rear. But then you notice all of the sophisticated living space between the entry and the pool. Then you realize this is no ordinary living space. The fixtures and finishes are all high end and meant to appeal to the discerning buyer. Notice the over-sized travertine marble floor tiles, crown molding, high baseboards, and decorative trim all set off by the pleasing color pallet on the walls and ceiling. The Viking kitchen was a standard feature when this home was built because "standard" was superior to this developer builder.
This home has a formal entry way with a beautiful staircase to the left. The first floor powder room is tucked away under the staircase.  Two sets of French doors open out from the living area to the rear garden with private swimming pool with waterfall. High fences and tropical foliage and palms provide privacy from the other homes.
The gate at the rear is where the pool boy or other service people can enter the property from a rear alley.  The property on the far side of the alley is South Park Condominiums. Each of those condos are one bedrooms. They share a really sweet pool and a very lovely garden. They won't be disturbing your life.
The master bedroom is located at the second floor rear. It has a large en-suite bath and two closets. French doors open out to the covered rear balcony that overlooks the pool below. This is a good spot to catch the famous Key West sunset without leaving the comforts of home. And it is a good place to watch your children or grand children play in the pool but not get wet.
The second floor front bedroom has a private bath plus its own covered balcony.  That balcony give s the occupant his or her own private space to read a book or to contemplate the complexities of the upcoming election or whatever chaos is occurring in the world beyond Key West. There is always chaos someplace else. Here, the big deal of the day is deciding where to go to dinner. The third floor bedroom (shown above) has a vaulted ceiling and lots of living space plus its own private bath. The third floor bedroom runs the length of the house. Besides the private bath, this room has extra space for the kids or hobbyist. One of my owners has built-in twin beds at the far side of this same room plus a queen bed similar to the one shown above. If you have got grand kids, they will love this space.

I have sold four homes in this development. My buyers love the quality workmanship that went into these homes and the convenient Casa Marina location. They can walk a couple of blocks over to the Casa Marina Club where two families have purchased annual memberships which includes use of the gym, private beach, and discounts of food and beverages. They can walk to Louie's Backyard or Salute on the Beach in a few minutes.  They can walk to upper Duval Street in about seven to ten minutes and take a cab back home at night.  For these buyers its almost like living in a resort. One of my buyers has retired to their home. The two other current families come to town as often as possible. They do not rent their homes, but it is permissible to do so. This unit has been rented as a monthly vacation rental.

916 Von Phister St, Key West - Casa Marina Contemporary

916 Von Phister Street is located in the tony Casa Marina Area of Key West. This bedroom community is a stone's throw from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The Casa Marina Resort is a short two block walk to the west. Two great ocean front restaurants (Salute on the Beach and Louie's Backyard) are located within a five minute walk.  The madness of Old Town is within easy biking distance for those times you want to break bread with tourists or attend a play at the Waterfront Playhouse or the Red Barn Theater. Otherwise, you'll enjoy the serenity of this little enclave.

The area is not without its ties to old Key West. Tennessee Williams' sister owned the house across the street at 915 Von Phister; Thomas McGuane lived half a block away also on Von Phister Street; for a brief time Ernest Hemingway lived two blocks away at the corner of South and Whalton Streets; Phil Caputo lived on Casa Marina Court; and today Judy Blume lives very near. Houses in the Casa Marina are typically located on larger lots than Old Town. Many of the homes have a semi-rural flare because most of the streets do not have sidewalks. Instead the public rights of way are often planted with grass or pea rock  with all sorts of palm trees and other tropical plantings. And unlike much of Old Town where many of the homes have become vacation rental money machines, most of the houses in the Casa Marina are primary residences or second homes. And one last thing: the Atlantic Ocean and beaches are just a couple of blocks away. You can be wiggling your toes in the water in minutes.
The listing Realtor describes 916 Von Phister Street this way:
"One of a kind, newly renovated, single family home. Oozing with the wow factor of midcentury and modern living all on one level. Stacking doors allow ample marriage of the outside and inside surrounded by two large patios and a glass tiled pool. Superior bright rooms flood the interiors with warm sunlight. Notable features are the telescope sky lights, oversized tiled porcelain floors, custom cabinetry, Bosch 800 series appliances, including double wall ovens, microwave drawer, dual beverage center and large Thermador refrigerator. Three en suite bedrooms with premium appointed bathrooms, den or fourth bedroom, private patios and ample closet space. All surrounded by a privacy wall with covered and uncovered parking enough for 3 cars."
Readers of my blog may recall I followed the renovation of this home for many months. I found a genuine throwback photo of this house taken from the Von Phister Street side in 1965. Other photos are recent. They show the transformation of the plain 1960s ranch into the sophisticated home it is today. The interior was totally gutted. External building changes included a new roof, installation of new impact windows and doors, and the construction of a new six foot privacy wall that envelops large corner lot. Landscape architect Craig Reynolds designed the pool and gardens.
The interiors are new throughout. Once you pass the threshold you behold a huge new space that is both subtle but demanding in the same instance. How can that be, you ask.  The color pallet used in the flooring and walls is very soft and unobtrusive so when you enter the house your eyes are automatically drawn first to the far end of the house which opens out to the pool. As you pass into the house you can't help noticing the contrasting colors of the pool, tropical gardens, and sky which add depth and dimension to the interior spaces. As the recently planted gardens grow and fill-in, the space will become even more lush and vibrant.
The public living spaces are bright and open into each other. The sleek porcelain floors and monochromatic color scheme tie the rooms together. Design elements such as light fixtures, tiles, mirrors, and so on catch the eye of the beholder.
A guest bath is located off the hallway leading to the bedrooms. This home has two master bedrooms each en-suite. Each with private outdoor garden space.
The west master bedroom suite is a bit larger. Dual doors at the far end of the room open into the bath which is a darker than the other master bath which seems almost opulent compared to the almost understated simplicity employed in this bathroom. When you look closer you quickly appreciate the richness of the minimalism which includes dual sinks with tilting mirrors and a huge glass enclosed shower. A set of dual doors open into one of two walk-in closets in this second master suite.
A third guest bedroom provides generous sleeping accommodations and equally dramatic en-suite bath. Like the two master suites, the guest bedroom has access to a small private garden on the other side of the impact doors. A large privacy wall insulates the house and garden from the street. Light flows in to the rooms but privacy prevails.
As I took photos of the baths I had to touch the tiles. They are unlike the "designer" tiles you see in so many homes. The tiles in the master bath almost have an art deco feel to me. They aren't, but they give off that aura.  And it is the aura of being different that separates this house from so many others. CLICK HERE to view more photos I took of this property.
Doors from the kitchen and living room open wide and seem to disappear into the walls. The outdoors and indoors become one as living and entertaining spaces merge. In the winter when your friends up north in New Jersey or Michigan are freezing their behinds around dinner time, you and your Key West friends will be having cocktails and canapes under the stars either by your pool or you can walk over to Louie's Backyard or any number of other places.
CLICK HERE to view the Key West mls datasheet on 916 Von Pister Street which is offered at $2,193,000. Besides the refined public spaces there are two master suites, one large guest bedroom, a fourth potential bedroom which could alternatively be used as a den/study, office, media room, or home gym. There are three full baths and one half bath, two off street parking places (one covered), pool and lanai,  and laundry. Please call me, Gary Thomas, 305-766-2642 to schedule a private showing of this freshly renovated home. I am a buyers agent and a full time Realtor at Preferred Properties Key West. I live in the Casa Marina Area and love it. Let me show you this house and this wonderful neighborhood.
