10 Lowes Ln Key West Florida, Just Listed

 

Just Listed by Laurie McChesney at Preferred Properties Key West - 10 Lowes Lane. This will sell fast so move fast down this slow lane or you will lose your chance. There a lots of lurkers out there waiting to pounce. 

First, I did not misspell the name of the lane. There are several spellings including Lowe Lane, Lowes Lane, Lowe's Lane. All are correct. The mailman and UPS driver will find you. Lowe''s Ln is located adjacent to 525 Grinnell Street or two buildings north of Southard Street. 

The house is located at the far end of the lane and next to the rear gated entry to a much larger estate type property that fronts onto Southard Street. I dug into my old shoebox and found a photo of the house taken in 1965. Notice the screened-in front porch and door at the rear. Compare that view to the photo at the top. The porch has been captured and is now a part of the interior. That increased the interior space to 1360 Sq Ft on two floors. The lot measures 2458 Sq FT which includes a nice pool with deck at the rear, a carport, and open space on the side. Let's look.



Even though the porch is gone, the door is still in the same location. The space is kind of odd and could be improved. The house has window units and cool just fine for now. 

The first floor has new flooring and the makings of a new kitchen. New cabinets were delivered as were new appliances. A new owner can install or do something different.


There are two good sized bedrooms on the second floor separated by the entry landing and shared bathroom. The second floor is move-in ready. It may not look it, but it really is. Or it could be renovated but that would not be required.

The bedroom photos show you the Dade Count y Pine walls and ceiling plus vents that were used in olden days to allow hot air to escape upward. Today air conditioning does that trick. 




The owners have architectural plans by Matthew Stratton to expand the living space and change the house a bit. Matthew is one  of the two premiere local architects in Key West.

The Historic Seaport is located about three long blocks to the right and the end of the lane. Duval Street is a short stroll via Southard or Fleming Street. Five Brothers is up on the corner. Old Own Bakery is a block to the north. What more could you want

None of the following listings are mine. I do hope that you will go and checkout the new listings and see what you can get for your dollars. I know prices are high. Nobody ever expected them to get this high. But I never expected a $100,000 cigar maker cottage in Old Town selling at $500,000 either. They are fetching over one million dollars today.  Let's venture around  the island including Key West by the Sea, Old Town, Casa Marina Area, Casa Marina East, Mid-Town, the Key West Golf Club, and the waterfront house located on the former Key West drive-in theater site. Yew we had a drive-in and bowling alley. We used to have cheap eats, cheap drinks, and cheap --- Well, we still have those.

The Least and Most Expenseve Homes Sold in Key West in the Past Week - No. 1

 


Since there are few new listings to discuss, I thought it would be interesting to note the sale of the least and most expensive single family home sales in Key West during the prior seven days. I got this idea from a Realtor I just started to follow on TikTok who by the way discussed the concept of slandering particular neighborhoods. I understand exactly what he said and meant. I try not to do that but sometimes fail miserably. Anyway, let's see what happened last week.

Only four single family homes closed during the past week. The least expensive was 312 Amelia Street, located in the Bahama Village area of Key West. See the photo I found of it taken in 1965 and compare it to the current photo in the Key West MLS. This home was listed at $1,169,000 and sold at $1,159,000 or $897.06 per sq ft. This is the same house after being renovated.

The most expensive home was located at 533 Petronia Street in the Old Town area of Key West. It was listed and sold at $3,495,000 or $1,868.98 per sq ft. This is the same house after being moved forward on the lot and renovated from ground to rooftop


I will continue this feature until we get some new listings. And maybe after.

Tom Foolery in Key West


I actually cursed at myself on Monday when I saw a new MLS listing in the 1600 block on Johnson Street in Key West. I thought it was a joke. Tomfoolery. But it wasn't. I am not really familiar with that block. I have driven it but do not recall anything memorable about homes located there other than they are normal 1960s houses. Some have been renovated but that specific area has not been upgraded. Period. I have no prior history with the specific property, the owner, or the out of area Realtor. Nothing. But the listing stirred genuine passion in me. See for yourself below.


Asking Price: $1,100,000.00 for the fixer. I drove by on Tuesday afternoon, got out of my car, and took the photos above and below. 

The Key West Real Estate market has gone MAD. $1,110,000 for  tear down house on a 41' X 88' sq ft lot in an area with known flooding issues. The price $282 per sq ft plus cost to demolish and cart of the old concrete block house. That's another $50,000 or so since cost of trash removal on on island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Add in $1,000,000 to build a new house. You may end up $2.2 million home with a modular house located next door and a basketball hoop in the street. No thanks.

Maybe the out of are agent got things confused. The empty lot located at 1127 Flagler Avenue has been sought after for years. It sold last week for $1,200,000 and never even on the market. Sold SNAP - just like that. While this 6700 sq ft lot is located about six blocks away from the Johnson listing, it is located in the Casa Marina Area surrounded by multi-million dollar homes.  If you get your internet expertise from Zillow, you miss the point. Location is key.

Look at the Johnson property a bit differently. I searched for homes in the $1,100,000 price range on my favorite site - ZILLOW. Look what $1.1 million can buy you elsewhere.



The four houses above are all active MLS listings. If I had $1.1 million to spend on a nice house I would buy one of them and take a plane ridge to Key West once a year. Makes more sense to me.
