810 Fleming Street, Key West - Just Listed

 

This is another Just Listed but not by me posts. This legal duplex is located in in the very heart of Old Town at 810 Fleming Street, Key West. It has the favored revival style architecture Key Westers refer to as Grand Conch. The house has 2,016 Sq Ft of living space and sits on a large rectangular lot that measures 24.7' X 113' deep. I dug down into my old shoebox and found three prior photos of the property that will help you appreciate its status and location on this very important block in Key West. 

The black and white photos was taken in 1965 and shows better than any other the classic revival style architecture of this lovely home. Note the pediments above the three bays on each floor. For those not familiar with the location, 810 Fleming Street is located next to the Sea Foam Condominiums to the left and the Curry Guest House to the right.

The photo above was taken in 1980 when the renovation of 812 Fleming Street (Sea Foam Condominiums) was underway. I took the  photo below in 2012 while showing the home across the street. During the 1980s and 1990s several of the larger buildings on this block were converted into guest houses.


If you don't recall the Sea Foam Condos, you may recognize Timmy Tuxedo standing outside the store of the same name located in the ground floor commercial condominium




It is the presence of 810 Fleming Street that should stir the creative juices of renovators. It is located two blocks from the historic seaport, four blocks from Duval Street, and has prime viewing area for the annual Fantasy Fest Peoples Parade. The back side of the property should really get renovators excited.

The lot runs 113 Feet from the front to the rear which has a traditional concrete yard. I kid you not. I learned many years ago that some Conchs preferred concrete yards which negated the need for lawn service companies. The good thing about this feature is a new owner basically has a blank slate upon which to add a pool and gardens.

Just Listed: 411 - 415 Grinnell Street, Key West


Just Listed: 411 - 415 Grinnell Street, Key West. This new listing of Preferred Properties Key West is a marriage of old and new, borrowed and blue. I have blogged about the historic home at 411 Grinnell Street several times over the years and featured 415 Grinnell Street while it was being built and later when completed in 2019. The original home at 411 Grinnell Street was renovated and a new residence constructed on the vacant lot next door to the north. Today they are one primary residence and a fully outfitted guest home. Now they are offered for sale  Let's take a look.


 I remember the first time I saw 411 Grinnell Street. It looked like many of the older homes in Key West - it had classic good looks and large lot next door that could be built upon. I always knew 411 Grinnell could be restored. I had no inkling how the two properties could become so grand.


411 Grinnell Street was renovated and expanded after 2012.  The original house 3/1 house with 1,403 Sq Ft of living space was totally renovated and a new pool added to the side yard. I began to photograph the construction of 415 Grinnell in 2018. It took well over a year to complete. Today the combined properties offer 4,877 Sq Ft of living space on an 8,377 Sq Ft lot in the heart of Old Town. The new house includes a larger air conditioner garage for your Conch Cruiser, Harley, or other vehicle of choice. 

  I was awed when I entered the new house for the first time. My eyes were drawn to the blue pool at the rear. That blue pool is visible from many of the rooms in both houses. And it is that blue theme that follows everywhere as well. While I got to see the MLS photos before the house was officially listed, I had no sense of the scale of the house or how grandly it was appointed. All of the little things add up to a whole lot of WOW. Some of the interior features include oyster stone floors from Jordan and hardwood floors from Austria. They are remarkable. Most of the interior walls are painted white. The ceilings are tall and provide a sense of grandeur not often seen in most homes in the historic district.The baseboards and trim are custom.The kitchen has everything. Literally everything including a Miele 112 bottle wine cooler.

The new home has four bedrooms and four and one-half bathrooms. The first floor guest bedroom shown above is painted blue - duh! The doors inside that room open out to one of three pools at this property. That space is used by the current owner as media room. But it has a huge closet with built-ins and a large bath with all of the conveniences.


This is a rich man's house. Or rich lady's. Or couples'. Or whatever pronoun you prefer. The size and the views are remarkable. 

There is a rooftop sundeck as well. I looked off in all directions to see what I could see and determine what others might see inside the huge back yard. Nothing. It is totally private. The rear grounds include an outdoor shower and two pool side fire pits.

1010 & 1012 Olivia Street, Key West - Just Listed


Just Listed 1010 & 1012 Olivia Street, Key West. If these two houses look familiar to readers. they should. I blogged about them in April 2015 and again in November 2020 when I shared the folk art of these two Ronny Bailey shown below. Click the November date to read the earlier blog which contains more of Bailey's work.

The listing agent states:

"The Historic Twins'' are two historic single-family homes located on a corner lot in Old Town, Key West and ready for the new owner to restore and build their Key West dream home. Approved plans convey with sale. May also be purchased with 911 Watson Street."  

 "City has determined both structures to be unsafe. Please see documents for more information."  The seller does have plans for renovation available to prospective buyers.

1309 Catherine Street, Key West - Just Listed


If you were to walk your dog, ride your bike, or jog past the imposing concrete wall at 1309 Catherine Street, Key West you might wonder what is on the other side. But then again you might just mind your own business and go on with your life. But if you got a chance to go through the gate you would be amazed at the totally hidden and unexpectedly enchanting secluded gardens,
