Just Listed,  916 Pohalski Lane Key West. Locals and returning guests who like to keep fit and generations of parents with little girls who were ballerinas will know this landmark property located just off Truman Avenue as The Coffee Mill. 916 Pohalski Lane is situated on a 28.5' X 54. 5' lot (or 1572 sq ft).  The 1256 sq ft building dates back to 1889 according to the Monroe County Property Appraiser.  The building appears to be corrugated metal. The metal roof was replaced in 2013. The property is zoned HHDR with uses that include single and two-family residences, multi-family residential uses, and the following conditional uses group homes, cultural and civic activities, educational institutions and daycare, nursing homes, places of worship, protective services, public and private utilities, parking lots and utilities.

I searched the Historic Sanborn Fire Maps to see if I could determine when the building first appeared on the maps. Unfortunately no buildings were shown until the 1912 map which was identified as "Coffee Roasting".

Just Listed, but not by me, 920 Pohalski Lane in Old Town Key West. There's truly good reason to jump for joy on this listing because this architect designed home offers designer features at an affordable price - $494,025.  This Bank Owned property was renovated and expanded around 000000. Today the house has 920 sq ft of living space divided between the first and second floors. The house sits on a good sized lot of 1925 sq ft (55' X 35'). The listing Realtor describes the property as:
"Redesigned 2/2 historic home with a unique floor plan. Upper level master suite, french doors from living room and kitchen open to a private deck with an in ground spa. Fully fenced for privacy." 
I looked in my old shoebox and found a photo of 920 Polhalski Lane that was taken about fifty years ago. The house was enlarged with a two story rear addition that now contains the living room with vaulted ceiling, kitchen, laundry room, and second floor master suite with vaulted ceiling and en-suite bath. A set of pocket doors open from the master suite to reveal the spa in the decked rear garden area.
The photos above show the generous usage of wood throughout this home. This is "new" wood as opposed to historic Dade County Pine.  I have shown this house several times over the years. I appreciate the almost "cabin-like" or masculine feel of this home. The living room and guest bedroom and bath share the first floor. A full bath is located off the living room but it is not en-suite to the bedroom. French doors at the rear open out to a partially covered rear deck that leads to the separate kitchen which is separate from the living area.  Pocket doors open to reveal the kitchen tucked into a comfy rear corner of the house.
The second floor master suite is magical. The vaulted ceiling gives this space such an expansive feel. Upper level windows punctuate the lower window and pocket doors to give the interior more light and to provide a dramatic element to the otherwise understated wood room. 
920 Pohalksi Lane is located less than half a block north of Truman Avenue and across the way from the Truman and White Chevron Station. The Coffee Mill dance studio and Zumba fitness is located next door to the north. The best fried chicken in town is sold 24 hours a day at the Citgo gas station opposite the Chevron station. Most of the gyms and yoga studios are located within two blocks of this location. The location will appeal to a hip buyer that appreciates being able to be close to most of Old Town and that wants to buy a place in good condition at an affordable price.The house needs some painting and cleaning, but otherwise looks to be in good condition. Get Fit in Key West - No dorks Allowed

I often mention that the area near the intersection of Truman Avenue and White Street has a lot of gyms and yoga studios. Commercial spaces are less expensive in this area which is still relatively close to much of Old Town Key West. The gyms and yoga studios are within walking or biking distance so cars are not necessary. Other gyms are located further east in the suburbs of Key West. I decided to take some photos of the various spots where locals and visitors go to get fit, stay fit, avoid the sun, avoid the rain, avoid the Conch Train, or avoid going to work or wherever it is that people don't want to go.

920 Pohalski Lane - Short Sale - Key West - Back on the Market

It's worth looking at!

This is a cottage home with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 950 sq ft of living space that sits on a 35' x 55' (1925 sq ft) lot. CLICK MAP for a Google aerial view and then click for a street view. The aerial will show you that this place is located near Truman Avenue. The street view will show you it is opposite the Truman & White Chevron Station. So that will probably eliminate 95% of people looking for a nice and affordable Key West cottage. My advice: get over it. There are many really nice small cottages on this little one-way lane that runs north just off Truman Ave. to Olivia Street. Most of the other houses or cottages on this block are darling little places that would cost a lot more if they were located on one of the swank lanes such as Curry Lane or Carey Lane. They aren't and as a result they are priced much lower when it is time to sell. Superior locations cost more money. Cute and convenient can cost less.

I wrote about the charming little place across the lane at 909 Pohalski when it was listed in December . It went under contract in a couple of days of being listed. I represented the buyer that purchaser that grabbed that little gem.

As for me, I think being able to walk over to the Citgo gas station to buy the best friend chicken in Key West (seriously!), or to walk a bit further to Sandy's to get a con leche, or maybe walk up Truman a couple of blocks to workout at the Old Town Gym, or walk 20 feet to do yoga at the Coffee Mill (located next door), is the essence of living in Key West. I'll bet people from New York have their pet places that they measure by how close the places they use constantly are located from where they live. Key West isn't big in the first place. But having places you really use weekly, if not daily, that are located with a block or two of where you live makes living in a specific neighborhood more enjoyable.
