 Just listed by Preferred Properties, that's where I work but this is not my listing, 1117 Stump Lane in Old Town Key West.  Budget buyers who are looking for a place they can move right into and do a little bit of fix-up over time or a buyer who wants to do a major renovation ought to take a look at this home.  The listing Realtor described this 1541 sq ft three bedroom two bath house this way:
"Located in the heart of Old Town Key West, on one of the best lanes between Frances and United sits this 3/2. On the ground level there is a living room, dining area, kitchen, bedroom, bath and laundry room. On the second level there are two bedrooms, bath and a large walk in closet. There is enough room in back for a small pool and patio. Just waiting for someones touches."
This is a property that will probably go under contract as soon as you can say "Jumping Jack Flash" because it is priced to sell and there are a lot of buyers who are getting desperate for a deal.   Click on GOOGLE MAP for an aerial perspective of the location and then us the toggle switch to do a GOOGLE WALK down the block. Check out the other homes on this quiet little lane that runs one direction from White Street to the east and ends at Frances Street on the west. Stump Lane is situated between Southard Street to the south and Fleming Street to the north. You'll pass the residence of a famous writer and individuals who are famous to their families and friends.


The lot is 28.5' x 100'. There is room for a pool in the rear.  Right now the back area is pretty much paved concrete plus some ornamental trees. There is no room for off street parking, but that is not a problem for this area as most of the houses on this little lane are single family homes that are owner occupied. There is no commercial activity competing for parking spaces.

I dug into the old shoe box and found a photo taken of the house in 1965. Compare that pic to the one just below which is quite recent. Not much has changed.

If you venture up the spiral staircase you might just fall in love with this place. I'd definitely make this my master suite. I'm not fond of spiral stairs, but I'd make an extra special exception in this case. The space is just wonderful.

Penthouse Loft


I think I must have been a seaman in a former life. But I get seasick, so I probably wasn't.  Still, I love to just stare at the horizon and watch the sky and ocean change colors. When storms head our way the sky turns gray and ominous.  The wind blows and the palm trees sway.  The ocean churns and spits up seaweed. The afternoon I took these photos a bunch of turtle sponges had washed ashore (see the second photo from the top). At night you may see the tiny lights on boats out in deeper water. I watched the renovation that took place last year place at 625 Eaton Street for several months. The old Grand Dame just kept getting prettier and prettier every day. The property was listed for sale in January 2010 for $929,000. The asking price has been reduced to $697,500.

The listing agent on this lovely piece of Key West history describes the home like this:
"Historic Beauty in the heart of Old Town Key West. This 1889 home was once owned and lived in by the famous artist Stephen Avila and just recently was renovated by the new owners that purchased this property from the Avila family. The Historic preservation award has been given to this Key West charmer. Huge porches and Dade county pine accent this 3 bedroom 3 bath gem. Footsteps to Duval and all of it's wonderful restaurants and galleries."
I have not been inside since the work has been done. But I showed the house several times when it was listed for sale two years ago. I wrote this about the house then "I was captivated by this property the very first time I stepped inside. The rooms just take you back to another time. The rooms are gracious in their simplicity."

625 Eaton Street is a 1734 sq ft gem with 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and all new interiors finishes and mechanical systems. But the facade of the house is the pretty much the same today as it was when it was built in 1889 except the porch has been restored, the shutters replaced, and the exterior freshly painted. And a cocktail pool has been added as well. This home ought to appeal to the purists who want a true Key West classic house on the outside but who also want the niceties of modern living and a great Old Town location.
