Just Listed: 1409 Grinnell Street, Key West - Casa Marina Area

Just Listed, but not by me, 1409 Grinnell Street, Key West. This Casa Marina Area home was originally built in 1972. It has just been totally renovated and is now available for sale.  The Casa Marina continues to grow in popularity with second home buyers who often seek contemporary homes on large lots with cost saving features such as impact windows generally not permitted in Old Town homes.
I love referencing the 1930 aerial photo of the Casa Marina Area where I added arrows indicating the locations of 1409 Grinnell Street and one of our premiere waterfront restaurants, Louie's Backyard. Today the scruffy area at the bottom right is Higgs Beach. A long swimming pier now extends out into the water. There are tennis courts, a playground, and a much more affordable restaurant, Salute on the Beach. It is this location near the beach that also makes homes in this area so attractive to new buyers. 
Take a moment and consider the scarcity of housing in the Casa Marina Area in 1930. Most of Key West's population was then concentrated in the Old Town area particularly near the historic seaport. As the population grew, other parts of the island saw new housing added. Most of the houses in the Casa Marina Area, midtown, and new town area were built after the end of World War II.  I moved into the area in 1995 when there were still a couple of never built upon lots. Most of the lots in the Casa Marina Area, like 1409 Grinnell, are larger than 4,000 square feet. Many lots are 10,000 square feet. Most of the streets, like Grinnell, do not have curbs and gutters. This "rural" feel is the opposite of the more densely populated Historic District where many of the lots are just 2500 square feet and heavily shaded by abutting two story buildings or ancient canopy trees.
This 1168 square foot home has four bedrooms including one located behind the kitchen. That room may also be used as a home office or media room. The fourth bedroom is located in the rear cottage. The house has new tile floors, impact windows and doors, a new kitchen, and three new bathrooms plus new HVAC. There is room for a pool adjacent to the covered patio and rear cottage.

Who wouldn't want to live on Love Lane?  I think most folks would find the concept of living on a Lane called Love quite appealing. To find a home located at the end of Love Lane in Key West should be downright magical. Please take a look at the photos below of 727 Love Lane, Key West offered for sale at $1,550,000.
The home is a series of saw-tooth additions which create a total interior living area of 1989 square feet with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The house has been totally renovated and shows spotlessly. The ceilings have been vaulted giving most rooms an expansive feel. Windows on either side of the house allow muted light to flow through the home. I stood in the living room and peered out across Love Lane. I sold the house opposite several years ago. It is equally adorable as are the other storybook houses on this coveted lane.

There is a home office located opposite the living room. An adjacent side door opens into the hallway which I noted to potential buyers as being a great feature in this or any other home. I love having a side door to bring groceries into the house without coming in the front door.
The kitchen, dining area, and laundry room are located at the rear of the house. There is additional interior covered storage behind and connected to the end of the house. As you can see the ceiling is vaulted in these spaces which are bathed in subtle sunlight during the daytime hours.
There is plenty of room for a pool. And there is easy access to a pool builder to bring equipment and materials onto the site to build the pool. That is not always the case in Old Town. This home is located in the coveted X Flood Zone. Love Lane is within easy walking distance to all of Old Town. Duval Street is two blocks away and the Historic Seaport is about three blocks. The back gate at 727 Love Lane opens to the backside of Love Lane which ends on Fleming Street. The seaport is two blocks north.

The lane has several charming houses like this. The house around the corner on Southard Street is decked out each year with the Peanuts gang. Other houses are more understated in their ode to the Christmas Season. Our little town comes even more alive during the next couple of weeks. But the charm of life on this little tucked away lane stays pretty much the same all the time - it's magical.

511 Frances Street, Key West - Old Town Charmer

Just Listed, but not by me, 511 Frances Street, Key West. What a beautiful home and what a great Old Town location. While the home blends in with the historic homes of the area, it was actually built in 1983. The current owners have updated the home with a new kitchen and three en-suite baths. And the exterior paint color was changed from white to the subtle yellow shown above and below.
Take a look at the photo immediately above. Pause. What does it look like?  Look below at the Pocket Park House located on Louisa Street just east to Simonton. The vaulted ceiling, wood walls, double doorways, and window certainly look like a cigar maker cottage to me.
The new kitchen opens out to the covered semi-enclosed dining area. This is a nice protected area to eat throughout the year.  The deck overlooks the pool and waterfall. The deck continues off to the the south with a pergola bar. There is a neat little shed tucked in the corner.
This house has always been one of my favorites. The octagonal room is used as one of three bedrooms in this home. The other two are traditional rectangular rooms. But this room with the five windows and incredible pool view is just too cute.
